Abstract

Transpiration is the process of losing fluid in the form of water from the living tissue of a
plant on the ground through the stomata, cuticle holes and lenticels. In this event what is lost
is not only water (H2O), but also carbon dioxide (CO2). Transpiration occurs in plants that
are on the soil surface, water diffuses from the humid air in the plant tissue (especially in
leaves) to the drier air in the atmosphere and environment. Diffusion in plants is related to
the plant's ability to absorb water from the soil through the roots to the leaves. In this study,
the materials used were ornamental plants Begonia sp. and Jasminum sambac. Begonia sp.
and Jasminum sambac are ornamental plants that are often cultivated by Indonesians in the
yard, because the planting process is easy and does not need special treatment to care for
them. The purpose of this research was to see the transpiration ratio between the leaves of
the Begonia, has wide leaf blade with Jasminum sambac has small leaf blade. In the
Jasminum sambac, water vapor is produced more than water vapor produced by the
Begonia sp. This is because the number of leaves on the Jasminum sambac is more than the
Begonia sp. In addition, the thickness of the leaves is also one of the factors that
distinguishes the amount of water vapor produced. Because the thickness of the leaves can
inhibit the respiration process, the thicker the leaves, the less likely the transpiration process
will occur.
